AMD Announce Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme Processors to Power Next-Gen Handheld Gaming Consoles

AMD announces its new Ryzen Z1 series high-performance processors to revolutionize handheld gaming consoles. The Z1 and Z1 Extreme aim to power the Asus ROG Ally, which will be the first among many future handhelds. 

AMD Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme Specifications

The Ryzen Z1 and Z1 extreme will be 4nm processors with up to 8 cores and 16 threads, based on the Zen 4″ architecture. The base Z1 will feature 4 AMD RDNA 3 compute units with 22MB cache. On the other hand, the Z1 Extreme will have a whopping set of 12 AMD RDNA 3 compute units with 24MB cache.

Both AMD Ryzen Z1 Series processors support the newest LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X memory standards. That’ll ensure quick performance and low latency for more responsive gaming. They will also support USB4 for quick and simple connecting for external storage and display devices. 

AMD’s Z1 Series Performance Claims and Predicted Figures 

AMD released an FPS comparison chart for both Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme. 

All titles in the comparison rival FPS figures to Mid-range PCs and come somewhat close to consoles like the PS5. 

According to some sources, the Z1 Extreme will have about 8.6 teraflops of graphic power. Compare that to the PS5’s 10.28 teraflops, the Steam Deck’s 1.6 teraflops, and you have a very capable handheld. 

The Handheld Gaming Market Getting Crowded

Nintendo has been the dominating player in the handheld gaming market for decades with the Nintendo Switch. The launch of Steam Deck was the start of a new wave of PC-like gaming on a device that is pretty much the size of an iPad.

Apart from the Asus ROG Ally, the market will soon see other manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie. Then there are also gaming phones like the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro that provides a different hybrid alternative. 

If the price is right, devices that are powered by the Z1 processors will soon create a dent in the PC-gaming market’s demand.
